摘要：美国梦源于美国殖民时期,它认为每一个人都有获得成功的机会,只要他努力奋斗。然而事实并非如此,本文主要通过分析《马丁·伊登》和《了不起的盖茨比》两篇文章中主人公所渴望的美国梦的异同和美国梦破灭的根本原因,从而来说明拥有平等的机会去创造财富并不意味着是真正的美国梦。只有通过实现地位平等,人格平等以及实现美国真正的民主,美国梦才不会破灭。
The American Dream arose in the colonial period, based on the assumption that each person has the same chance to create wealth and success through their own efforts. However, it does not always work. This essay makes a comparison and contrast in the two characters’ American dreams and the fundamental reasons for their deaths in Martin Eden and The Great Gatsby. It shows us that equal chance does not mean the real American dream. Only by realizing the equal social statue and the real American democracy can the American dream exist and will not be broken.
